So often, good design lives at the intersection of beautiful form and practical function. And when it comes to redesign projects, these factors must also complement the existing product, maintaining its essence while also improving upon the original.
This was the challenge KOODESIGN accepted for the PowerTear Elmendorf tearing tester made by SDL Atlas. This is a professional piece of equipment used for testing the tear strength of all kinds of fabric materials. We were able to maintain (and in some areas accentuate) the existing features while modernizing the overall look and feel.
When you have a product that serves a specific (and important) commercial function, what’s the right level of aesthetic flair to go for? We always aim for a careful, optimized balance of making design features look good, while also improving the usability of the product wherever possible.
For the SDL Atlas PowerTear Elmendorf tearing tester, we made a number of tweaks to improve the way it looks, and the way it works. From the improved display screen and refashioned bezel to other future-friendly refinements, the new product maintains the essence of the previous while adding a feel of high-tech modernity and intuitive functionality.
